Poor photo but you'll get the idea - achieved what I had hoped to today though. It feels good to be finally putting things together.
Saturday will be the next chance to sew - tomorrow = work = I think I'll order ABB....(ie 'another bloody book').

Ready to Roll
All the pieces are ready for a final press then spray baste and sew.....I've made a list and checked it so many times even Santa Claus would get giddy so I'm hopeful I now have everything I need to get this quilt under construction.
I'll get back to you asap (whenever that is),

Messing Around in Boats
Alternatively, 'Father's Day - two months late'.......
What do you do when no children are available to meet up on Father's Day and some of your best friends have realised a life-long ambition and bought a boat? The only sensible thing - pack some food and wine and join them on a small adventure in Jervis Bay.......
I am not normally interested in things nautical but this craft is a thing of beauty.....and big enough to feel very comfortable on........
I wouldn't normally show pictures of myself, especially in my flannel pyjamas, but this is just to prove to some people (you know who you are) that I was up to see the dawn - and it was a stunner....
We discovered next morning we were not alone - this boat joined us....
....and this one....but as you can see there was plenty of room.....and a quiet calm which was a joy.
As we were moored in a non-fishing zone it was deemed necessary to move so the fathers could wet a line and aim to catch breakfast or lunch - fortunately we had bacon and eggs on board. (The mothers retired with cups of tea and books til breakfast time.)

| The father of my children with a friend we watched become a father and now a grandfather - twice..... |
| Don't ask me what any of those ropes are for. |
| Our faithful little friend followed us everywhere - which was just as well or we'd still be on the catamaran... |
| 'Hole in the Wall' - our overnight mooring spot. |
| Dawn over Point Perpendicular Lighthouse |

| The rock strata provided food for thought..... |
| Target Beach - the breakfast spot
Coffee - post bacon and eggs......expertly prepared by the fathers.....
|
The following afternoon it fell to me to safeguard the gear while the others took the boat to its permanent mooring which was definitely no hardship as it presented me with opportunities to practise my photography - high and low horizon shots for sketching (maybe I'm kidding myself there) and close-ups of the water and reflections, all the while wondering how you would go about painting that - or even stitching it......think texture and pattern and shapes - at least that's what I told myself.
| A modern quilting pattern? |
| Zigzag stitching or wet-in-wet watercolour? |
| Light and shade? |
| One of my favourite Australian plants - Tea Tree...... |
All too soon the others returned and we left the serenity of the Bay and joined the madness on the highway to get the workers back home to prepare for the week.
| A perfect sunset to finish the day.......
Both fathers thoroughly enjoyed themselves - and the mothers survived, too. Actually, children? What children?......

Next Steps
The five columns are done, the vertical sashing strip and borders are cut and I'm gearing up for the QAYG construction.
A few bits to sort out and I can start putting it all together. A little creative patching will be required for the backing columns as I'm a bit short of fabric to make it all the same (I bought the last yardage on the bolt but it wasn't enough) - but then again, that fits in with the improvisational nature of the quilt.
Also have to cut out the batting strips - not looking forward to that as it usually seems to have a mind of its own. If anyone has any tips on that I'd appreciate some.
I'll let you know how I get on,

Flannel Update
You may have to take my word for it but this is progress. Things should move along a little faster from here.....

It Seems to be Working
A quick post....another finish for October. (My plan to not start anything new seems to be working - to a point.)
This tablerunner is another Christmas 2012 project finished in time for Christmas 2013 - better late than never as the old adage goes.

Meanwhile my head hurts from the maths to prepare all the other bits for the flannel quilt - in other words I may be a bit short of fabric for the backing - another reason to get creative....
Back to the calculations,

More October progress...............
Thirty improv blocks ready to be trimmed - step 1, tick.....
Step 2 set to get underway this week - sashing strips and QAYG - improv of course.....
And on our sunny doorstep this week - this little group hanging out together......
What else would you do if you were a lizard and the sun was shining?
